Colour Your World, with Artist Emma Higgins

Step inside Emma Higgins’ studio in Knocklyon. Canvases lean against every wall like oversized confetti; pots of paint jostle for space among sketch books; there’s always music on, usually something upbeat and unapologetically joyful. Emma calls it “hanging joy on every wall”—a promise she keeps with every bold brush-stroke.

Emma in her happy place, by the easel

I spent a relaxed day in Emma’s colourful studio — well, at least until I locked my keys inside my car at the end of the session, but that is a story for another day!

Art being created live during our session

Emma’s background in textiles means colour and pattern are second nature to her. Her canvases burst with punchy pinks, lime and pops of cobalt.

She paints the way some people dance— instinctively, energetically, wholeheartedly—and my brief was simply to document her authentic self on camera.

What I like the most about branding photography for artists & makers is that we can let the studio and the work do the talking.

No stiff white backdrop—just brushes clinking in jars, paint catching the light, music on a friendly shuffle.

While the kettle boiled we chatted through her process: pencil scribbles, sketches, live drawing, colour theory…

By the way, it is extraordinary to witness how Emma comes alive when she starts talking about colour!!

Can you feel that magic sparkle?

Tools of the trade

…and lots of colour palettes!

Don’t get me started on Emma’s sketch books. They are stunning!

In terms of photography, I see great branding as something bigger than pretty pictures. It’s Emma immersed in her craft, preparing orders, mixing colours, cleaning her brushes on her apron…

It’s opening the door with paint on her fingers, happy to let you nose around. Did you know that, on Friday mornings the studio morphs into a classroom? Newbies and seasoned artists side by side—because everyone deserves a play-date with colour!

Emma offers Limited Edition Prints of her work, which she prints and frames herself in the studio. Check them out here

If you need a splash of sunshine, her shop is the quickest fix. Original paintings, Limited Edition Prints, stationery, home textiles, workshops, or a studio visit, is all one click away at www.emmahiggins.ie.

I love Emma’s use of neons and the attention to detail

Photographing Emma reminded me why I love working behind the camera:

when a brand shows its heartbeat, people feel it.

Your studio. Your story.

Your work deserves visuals that do it justice.
